The Kal Bhairav Temple is one of the most ancient and revered shrines in Varanasi, dedicated to Kal Bhairav, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. Known as the Kotwal (guardian) of Kashi, Kal Bhairav is considered the protector of the city. It is believed that no one can stay in Kashi (Varanasi) without his permission, and every devotee must seek his blessings during their spiritual journey in the city.

The deity is depicted as a fearsome figure adorned with a garland of skulls and holding a trident, symbolizing destruction of evil and protection of dharma. Unlike many temples, the face of Kal Bhairav is visible through a silver mask, and his idol is adorned with oil and vermilion, creating a powerful spiritual aura.

Locals believe that visiting Kal Bhairav Temple wards off negative energies, fear, and ill health. Pilgrims also purchase a small protective thread (Bhairav Raksha Sutra) from the temple, believed to bring safety and strength.

Best Time to Visit

The temple is open year-round, but the best time to visit is during the cooler months from October to March. The temple sees special celebrations and high footfall during Kal Bhairav Ashtami, a festival dedicated to the deity.
